Special thanks to the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for making a long distance call to the North Pole and giving Santa the directions to Cabe Middle School. We had a surprise visit from Santa Larry who brought gifts for each of our outstanding students. Santa Larry has been all over the world and has been featured on multiple news outlets. He gained world-wide fame by becoming the first Santa of color at the nation’s largest mall, Mall of America. Santa Larry is also an alumnus of Henderson State University. Thanks again Santa Larry and Alpha Phi Alpha for spreading joy and holiday cheer throughout our building!

Nicole McGough with Patterson Federal Credit Union partnered with Amy Ledbetter, counselor at GHS, to provide a reality fair to upperclassmen. The fair provided a unique opportunity for students to explore the financial challenges they will face in adulthood. The students identified a career choice and were given starting salaries. They then completed a budget sheet requiring them to live within their monthly salary while paying for basics such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and groceries. Along the way, needs versus wants were tested as community volunteers sold vacations, puppies, concert tickets and other impulse spending items.
Gurdon Public Schools Wellness Center has been awarded a 2023 Delta Dental Community Grant grant in the amount of $11,315.50 to purchase a portable nitrous oxide cart and other dental supplies for our dentist office. The option to have nitrous oxide is a game changer for our students to assist in reduction of pain and to lessen anxiety for those who are nervous about their dental visit!
We are excited to continue our partnership with Dr. Scott Byrd and to continue providing excellent oral health care to our students in our state-of-the-art school dental office.
